Every year, Miami-Dade commissioners complain around budget time in the fall that they wish they had the opportunity to take a more in-depth look at the county's spending plan.
So this year, Commissioner Esteban "Steve" Bovo, who heads the board's finance committee, arranged meetings in the spring for each department to lay out its needs.
But his colleagues hardly seem interested.
Last week, only Bovo and Commissioner Sally Heyman were present at the latest such meeting -- and Heyman had to leave early. Only Bovo was around to hear that the transit department, for example, has a $13 million budget hole.
"This is going to turn into one of those Senate committees where there's only one member here," Bovo lamented.
What made the empty dais look even emptier was that, minutes earlier, nine of 13 commissioners had been in attendance for a meeting approving changes to the county's comprehensive development master plan.
The next finance committee meeting on the budget is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. June 25.
An earlier version of this post misstated the date of the next meeting.
