U.S. Rep. Joe Garcia planned to take his reelection campaign to the Miami-Dade County school board Tuesday afternoon. But the Democratic congressman was a no-show after supporters of Republican opponent Carlos Curbelo showed up waving signs.
Curbelo is a sitting school board member and was in a district meeting during the scheduled news conference.
A small crowd had gathered outside district headquarters in downtown Miami, but they scattered when three men appeared holding neon signs asking, "Where is Roly Arrojo?"
Federal prosecutors are investigating whether Garcia's former campaign manager and chief of staff helped fund mailers for Arrojo, a shadow tea-party candidate, in a 2010 election.
Garcia's campaign said the reason the congressman didn't show up because events in Key West and Homestead ran long and he was running late -- not because of Curbelo's supporters.
On Twitter, Curbelo remarked: "I was looking forward to saying 'hello.'"
