Wednesday: Five things to watch in Tallahassee

Tensions remain high in Tallahassee as the verbal arrows fly over the fate of the state’s handling of health insurance for the uninsured.  Meanwhile, the House will meet in a full sessionWednesday but much of the action will be in the Senate.

Here are five things to watch:

  • Expect a testy exchange between the Senate Ethics and Elections Committee and the Secretary for the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration, Liz Dudek, at her confirmation hearing at 1:30 p.m. Dudek’s agency has been the state’s lead negotiator with the federal government over the future of the federal health insurance program known as the Low Income Pool.
  • Should Florida juries be required to unanimously agree to recommend the death penalty? That is the question before the Senate Judiciary Committee at a 2 p.m. meeting.
  • The Senate Judiciary Committee also hears SB 724, a bill to require women seeking abortions to wait 24 hours before they are allowed to have the procedure.
  • The Senate Education Pre-K-12 Committee will hear a bill by Sen. Greg Evers, R-Baker, that will allow some individuals to carry weapons on K-12 school grounds. The meeting is at 5 p.m.
  • The James Madison Institute and The Village Square hosts a debate on dark money and the issue of whether nonprofits should be required to disclose their donations if they are engaged in lobbying and political communication. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Gus B. Turnball Center.
