Happy Holidays from Alex Diaz de la Portilla -- your next Miami City Commissioner?

For all the intrigue surrounding Frank Carollo's decision on whether to run for mayor of Miami in November, the battle to take his soon-to-be-open District 3 city commission seat may actually be more interesting.

Last week, Zoraida Barreiro, the wife of Miami-Dade County Commissioner Bruno Barreiro, confirmed her interest in launching a campaign. Shortly after, Tommy Regalado, the son of Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado, confirmed that he, too, is considering a run at the seat.

Then, on Friday, residents in Little Havana received a holiday card from former state Sen. Alex Diaz de la Portilla, who so happens to live in District 3. Diaz de la Portilla has been rumored for months to have interest in Carollo's spot on the commission.

So, was the Happy Holidays! card -- which included Diaz de la Portilla's office phone number but no political messaging or disclaimer -- related to a potential campaign?

"Can't I just be in a yuletide mood?" Diaz de la Portilla texted a reporter after acknowledging his interest.

"I have had some conversations about a possible run, but that is all they have  been -- conversations," he wrote. "I am vacationing for Christmas and enjoying time with my family. There will be plenty of time for political conversations after the holiday."
