Florida Cabinet signs off on Ryan Matthews as interim DEP leader

Gov. Rick Scott and the Florida Cabinet voted unanimously Wednesday to appoint Ryan Matthews to be the state's interim secretary for the Department of Environmental Protection.

Matthews replaces Jon Stevenson who announced his resignation almost two weeks ago.

Matthews has worked with DEP since 2015 and was the deputy secretary for regulatory programs.

Matthews could hold the position for nearly four months. Scott told the other three elected Cabinet members that the goal is to review potential applicants and have a final vote on a new DEP leader on May 23.
