Strikers sign Miami native Mitchell Lopez

71 Days to the World Cup...

Closer to home, the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers, who open their Spring Season Apr. 12 vs. the Ottawa Fury, just signed local midfielder, Mitchell Lopez. The 20-year-old Opa Locka native went through open tryouts in February and impressed the coaching staff.

“Mitchell is a very hard-working young man and shows a lot of promise,” said Strikers Head Coach Günter Kronsteiner in a press release. “He impressed us at the tryout and had continued to give his all for us in preseason.”

Lopez appeared in several preseason games for the Strikers, getting time at both center back and holding midfield. He scored a memorable volley from outside the box in the 5-1 win against Florida Atlantic University on March 16.

Born in Opa-locka, Fla. to a Brazilian mother and Cuban father, Lopez moved around during his youth and lived in South Florida, Brazil and Uruguay.
